Butterfly valves are the workhorse of large-diameter isolation in UAE HVAC, district cooling, water treatment, and industrial plants. When you need to shut off or regulate flow in pipes DN50 and above, butterfly valves offer significant advantages over ball valves in size, weight and cost.
However, selecting the wrong type โ wafer vs lug vs flanged, EPDM vs PTFE liner, manual vs actuated โ leads to leaks, operational problems or rejection at inspection. This guide covers everything you need to know.
1. Connection Type โ Wafer, Lug or Flanged?
This is the first decision and the most consequential. Each connection type has a specific installation context.
- Clamped between two pipe flanges
- Lightest and cheapest option
- Cannot isolate for maintenance
- โ HVAC, cooling circuits
- โ Dead-end service
- โ Where pipe removal is needed
- Threaded lugs on body
- Can be used as line-end valve
- One side removable with valve closed
- โ Dead-end service
- โ Where maintenance isolation needed
- โ Standard in UAE consultant specs
- Full flanged body both sides
- Heaviest and most expensive
- Easiest removal for maintenance
- โ DN200+ industrial service
- โ Water treatment plants
- โ High-cycle, critical service
Most UAE MEP specifications and DEWA-approved designs default to lug-type butterfly valves for DN50 and above, even in non-dead-end service. The marginal cost difference versus wafer type is small, and the maintenance flexibility is significant in a market where access for servicing can be limited in plant rooms and shaft spaces.
2. Liner (Seat) Material โ EPDM vs NBR vs PTFE
The liner is the resilient seating material moulded inside the valve body that provides shutoff against the disc. Choosing the wrong liner causes premature failure or chemical attack.
| Liner | Temperature Range | Applications | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| EPDM Ethylene Propylene | โ20ยฐC to +120ยฐC | Potable water, HVAC, cooling tower, steam condensate | Best choice for general water service in UAE. Good ozone and UV resistance โ important for UAE climate. WRAS compliant grades available. |
| NBR Nitrile Butadiene | โ20ยฐC to +80ยฐC | Fuel, oil, mild chemicals, compressed air | Petroleum-resistant. Do not use in water systems โ NBR degrades in potable water contact. Common in oil & gas auxiliary lines. |
| PTFE Polytetrafluoroethylene | โ30ยฐC to +150ยฐC | Aggressive chemicals, high purity water, acids, solvents | Chemically inert โ survives most chemical environments. Higher cost. Softer shutoff than EPDM. Required for chemical duty butterfly valves. |
| Silicone | โ50ยฐC to +180ยฐC | Food & beverage, pharmaceutical, high temp | FDA compliant. Good for high-temperature steam and food processing. Higher cost. |
| Viton (FKM) | โ20ยฐC to +180ยฐC | Hydrocarbons, aromatic solvents, high temp chemicals | Premium choice for aggressive chemical and hydrocarbon service. Used in ADNOC-adjacent industrial applications. |
3. Body and Disc Material
Ductile Iron (GGG 40 / EN-GJS-400-15)
The standard choice for UAE HVAC and water service butterfly valves DN50 to DN600. Good strength, economical, widely available. Should have epoxy coating for corrosive or potable water service.
Cast Iron (GG25)
Older specification โ still found in legacy systems. More brittle than ductile iron. Specify ductile iron for new projects.
Stainless Steel AISI 316
Required for aggressive chemical service, offshore, and food & beverage. High cost but necessary where corrosion resistance is critical. MT offers SS316 butterfly valves for industrial applications.
Disc Material
The disc (the rotating plate that provides shutoff) can be:
- Ductile iron โ standard for water and HVAC
- SS304 or SS316 โ for corrosive media or potable water requiring metal disc (with EPDM liner)
- Nylon/PPS coated โ for aggressive chemicals where cost must be controlled
4. Pressure Rating
Butterfly valves are typically rated PN 6, PN 10, or PN 16. Unlike ball valves, most butterfly valves are NOT suitable for high-pressure applications โ they are designed for low to medium pressure service.
| PN Class | Max Pressure | Typical UAE Application |
|---|---|---|
| PN 6 | 6 bar | Large water mains, irrigation, gravity-fed systems |
| PN 10 | 10 bar | HVAC, cooling tower, low-pressure water |
| PN 16 | 16 bar | Commercial HVAC, medium pressure water, fire fighting |
| PN 25 | 25 bar | District cooling, high-pressure HVAC โ use triple offset valve above PN 25 |
Dubai and Abu Dhabi district cooling networks operate at chilled water supply/return pressures of 10โ16 bar. Standard PN 10 butterfly valves are NOT suitable โ specify PN 16 minimum with high-performance disc and EPDM seat. For pressures above 16 bar, use ball valves or triple offset butterfly valves.
5. Actuator Selection
Large-diameter butterfly valves in UAE plant rooms are almost always actuated. The actuator choice depends on the system:
- Manual (lever / gear box): DN50โ150 use lever. DN150+ should use gearbox โ lever torque is too high for safe manual operation. Standard in isolation-only service.
- Pneumatic actuator: Fast operation, fail-safe available (spring return), ideal for automatic isolation. Requires compressed air supply (typical UAE plant rooms have instrument air available).
- Electric actuator: Used where compressed air is not available or where precise positioning for throttling is needed. Higher cost, slower operation than pneumatic.
- Hydraulic actuator: Large-diameter water mains DN500+ where high torques require hydraulic power.
MT supplies butterfly valves with manual lever and gearbox options. For actuated configurations, we recommend pairing our ductile iron butterfly valve body with market-standard pneumatic or electric actuators using ISO 5211 mounting flange โ the international standard used by all major actuator brands.
6. Quick Selection Guide
| Application UAE | Type | Liner | PN | Actuation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| HVAC chilled water DN50โ300 | Lug wafer | EPDM | PN 16 | Lever / gearbox |
| District cooling DN100โ600 | Lug or flanged | EPDM | PN 16 | Electric / pneumatic |
| Potable water distribution | Lug (WRAS-spec) | EPDM WRAS | PN 10โ16 | Gearbox manual |
| Fire fighting riser | Lug (FM approved) | EPDM | PN 16 | Manual lever with indicator |
| Chemical process | Flanged | PTFE or Viton | PN 10โ16 | Pneumatic spring return |
| Irrigation / landscaping | Wafer | EPDM | PN 6โ10 | Manual lever |
| Sewage / wastewater | Flanged GGG40 | EPDM | PN 10 | Gearbox |
7. When to Use Butterfly vs Ball Valve
| Parameter | Butterfly Valve | Ball Valve |
|---|---|---|
| Size range | Best from DN50 upwards | Best DN8 to DN100 |
| Cost | Lower cost per DN for large sizes | Higher cost at DN80+ |
| Pressure | Up to PN 25 (resilient seat) | Up to PN 63 and above |
| Shutoff quality | Good (bubble-tight at low pressure) | Excellent (zero leakage) |
| Flow restriction | Some โ disc always partially in flow | Full bore = zero restriction |
| Space requirement | Very compact โ no straight run needed | More compact at small DN |
| Throttling | Good for proportional control | Not recommended for throttling |
