A
A-316
Stainless steel grade with added molybdenum for higher corrosion resistance, especially against chlorides. Standard material for stainless steel ball valve discs and bodies in coastal and chemical applications.
ACS
Attestation de Conformité Sanitaire — French sanitary conformity certification for materials in contact with drinking water. Issued by the French Directorate General for Health.
AENOR
Asociación Española de Normalización — Spanish standardisation body. The AENOR mark certifies compliance with European and Spanish technical standards.
B
Bibcock
A type of garden tap or faucet with a hose connector, typically threaded with BSP or NPT. Common in irrigation and outdoor water installations.
BIM
Building Information Modelling — a digital representation of physical and functional characteristics of facilities. MT provides BIM-ready Revit files for major references.
BSP
British Standard Pipe — the most common pipe thread standard in Europe and the GCC. Available in two variants: BSPP (parallel) and BSPT (tapered).
Brass
Copper-zinc alloy used in MTs hydrosanitary valve range. Forged hot-stamped brass under EN 1254-2 standard for corrosion resistance and machinability.
Butterfly Valve
A quarter-turn valve with a circular disc rotating around an axis perpendicular to the flow. Lightweight and economical for diameters from DN50 upwards.
C
Cast Iron
Iron-carbon alloy used in MTs industrial valve range — particularly for flanged butterfly valves, gate valves and Y-strainers from DN50.
CE Marking
Conformité Européenne — mandatory mark indicating conformity with applicable EU directives. Baseline requirement for any product released in the European market.
Check Valve
Also known as non-return valve — allows fluid flow in one direction only, preventing backflow. Available in disc, swing, ball and lift configurations.
CSTB
Centre Scientifique et Technique du Bâtiment — French technical assessment body that issues Avis Technique certifications for construction products.
D
DIN
Deutsches Institut für Normung — German national standards organisation. Many flange dimensions and pressure ratings follow DIN standards across Europe.
DN
Diamètre Nominal — nominal internal diameter of a pipe or valve in millimetres. DN50 ≈ 2", DN65 ≈ 2½", DN80 ≈ 3", and so on.
DVGW
Deutscher Verein des Gas- und Wasserfaches — German Gas and Water Association. Certifies products for use in German drinking water and gas networks.
E
EAC
Eurasian Conformity — mandatory certification for products sold in the Eurasian Customs Union (Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Armenia, Kyrgyzstan).
EAN
European Article Number — 13-digit barcode standard used worldwide for product identification. Every MT reference has its own EAN-13 code.
EN 10204 3.1
European standard for material certification. The 3.1 type provides certified test reports signed by the manufacturers authorised inspector.
EPDM
Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer — a synthetic rubber widely used as seat material in butterfly valves and as flexible body in expansion joints. Excellent water and steam resistance.
F
Fire Safe
Certification standard (API 607 / ISO 10497) for valves designed to maintain integrity during external fire exposure. Critical for petrochemical and industrial applications.
Flange
A protruding rim with bolt holes used to connect pipes and valves. PN-10 and PN-16 are the most common pressure ratings; ISO and DIN are the most common dimensional standards.
Full Bore
A valve design where the internal opening matches the pipes full inner diameter, minimising flow restriction and pressure drop. Standard on MT ball valve premium ranges.
G
Gate Valve
A linear-motion valve with a sliding gate that controls flow. Designed for fully open or fully closed service — not flow regulation.
H
HVAC
Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning — major application sector for MT butterfly valves, Y-strainers and expansion joints.
I
ISO 9001
International quality management standard. MTs production and distribution chain is ISO 9001:2015 certified by TÜV Rheinland.
ISO 14001
International environmental management standard. MTs operations are ISO 14001:2015 certified, demonstrating commitment to sustainability.
K
Kiwa
Independent Dutch certification body. Issues product certificates for water, gas and construction in the Netherlands and beyond.
KOMO
Dutch certification system administered by Kiwa. Confirms compliance with construction sector standards including UNE-EN 13828 and NKB-13.
P
PED
Pressure Equipment Directive (2014/68/EU) — European regulation for the design, manufacture and conformity assessment of pressure equipment above 0.5 bar.
PIM
Product Information Manager — MTs centralised database of all product technical and commercial information. Keeps catalogues, datasheets and pricing synchronised.
PN
Pression Nominale — nominal pressure rating in bar at 20°C. PN-10 = 10 bar, PN-16 = 16 bar, PN-25 = 25 bar, PN-30 = 30 bar.
PZH
Państwowy Zakład Higieny — Polish National Institute of Public Health. Issues drinking water material certifications in the Polish market.
S
Sintef
Norwegian independent research organisation. Issues PS-series product certificates accepted across the Nordic construction industry.
T
TRN
Tax Registration Number — UAE VAT identifier. Mandatory for businesses with annual turnover above AED 375,000.
TÜV Rheinland
Independent German certification body. Audits and certifies MTs ISO 9001 quality and ISO 14001 environmental management systems.
W
Wafer
A valve installation type where the body is sandwiched between two flanges with through-bolts. Standard for butterfly valves.
WaterMark
Mandatory Australian certification for plumbing and drainage products in contact with drinking water.
WRAS
Water Regulations Advisory Scheme — UK certification for products suitable for contact with potable water. Required for installations connected to the UK public water network.
Y
