Selecting the wrong ball valve is one of the most common and costly mistakes in UAE construction and industrial projects. A valve specified for the wrong pressure class, wrong material or wrong certification can cause delays at inspection, premature failure, or outright rejection by authorities like DEWA or ADNOC.
This guide covers everything MEP contractors, procurement engineers and specifiers need to know when selecting ball valves for projects in the UAE and GCC region.
1. Pressure Rating (PN) — Most Common Mistake
PN stands for Pression Nominale (Nominal Pressure) and indicates the maximum allowable pressure at 20°C in bar. This is the most frequently miscalculated parameter in valve selection.

Always specify one PN class above the system operating pressure. Dubai's water distribution network runs at 8–10 bar, so PN 16 is the minimum — PN 25 is recommended for peace of mind and to accommodate pressure surges.
2. Body Material — Brass vs Cast Iron vs Stainless Steel
The three most common ball valve body materials each have their place. Choosing incorrectly leads to corrosion failures, contamination issues, or unnecessary cost.
Brass (DZR / CW617N)
The workhorse for UAE plumbing and HVAC projects. Dezincification-resistant (DZR) brass is mandatory in chlorinated water systems — standard brass corrodes rapidly in Dubai's treated water supply. Look for WRAS or KIWA certification as proof of DZR compliance.
- ✓ Ideal for: potable water, HVAC, cooling circuits
- ✓ Size range: DN8 to DN100 (up to DN200 with flanged ends)
- ✗ Avoid in: seawater, concentrated chemicals, high-temperature steam
Cast Iron / Ductile Iron
Common in large-diameter distribution networks and industrial applications. Heavier, lower cost per DN, but requires protective coatings in corrosive environments.
- ✓ Ideal for: irrigation, fire fighting (FM approved), sewage
- ✗ Avoid in: potable water (use ductile iron with epoxy lining), saline environments
Stainless Steel AISI 316 / 316L
Premium choice for food & beverage, pharmaceutical, chemical and offshore applications. AISI 316 contains 2–3% molybdenum which dramatically improves chloride resistance — critical in coastal UAE environments.
- ✓ Ideal for: food processing, pharma, chemical duty, offshore, seawater service

BSP (British Standard Pipe) is the dominant thread standard in UAE plumbing and HVAC — it's the British legacy from the UAE's early infrastructure development. NPT threads are required in oil & gas and any ADNOC-regulated projects. The two are NOT interchangeable despite appearing similar.
4. Full Bore vs Reduced Bore
Full bore (also called full port) valves have a ball bore equal to the pipe inner diameter — no restriction to flow. Reduced bore (standard port) have a ball one size smaller.
- Use full bore when: flow velocity matters, pigging is required, pressure drop budget is tight, or specification explicitly requires it (DEWA / ADWEA projects often do)
- Use reduced bore when: it's purely an isolation valve and flow characteristics don't matter — it's cheaper and lighter

5. Certifications Required for UAE Projects
UAE projects involve multiple regulatory bodies. Specifying valves without the correct certifications causes expensive substitutions during inspection.

6. Temperature Range
UAE ambient temperatures can reach 50°C outdoors. Combined with process temperatures, this affects seal material selection:
- PTFE seats: –20°C to +180°C — standard for most applications
- RPTFE (reinforced PTFE): Better for steam and high-cycle applications
- PEEK seats: –60°C to +260°C — for high-temperature steam or cryogenic
- Viton (FKM) seats: For chemical and hydrocarbon service

- Nominal diameter (DN or inch): e.g., DN25 = 1"
- Pressure class: PN 16 / PN 25 / ANSI 150
- Body material: Brass DZR / SS316 / Ductile Iron
- Connection ends: BSP F-F / Flanged EN 1092 / ANSI B16.5
- Bore type: Full bore (specify if required)
