HVAC Code Requirements in the UAE

Key regulatory requirements UAE MEP engineers must meet when specifying HVAC valves for Dubai and Abu Dhabi projects.

District Cooling — PN16 Minimum
Dubai district cooling networks (Empower, Tabreed) operate at elevated pressures. PN16 is the minimum pressure class for all valves on district cooling primary and secondary loops. Butterfly valves DN50–DN300 EPDM-lined are the standard specification.
WRAS / KIWA — Water-Side Valves
For HVAC systems sharing water infrastructure with DEWA/ADWEA potable supply, WRAS or KIWA certification is required. MT ball valves DN8–DN100 carry both certifications, accepted by DEWA engineers on residential MEP drawings.
Dubai Green Building Regs 2023
Dubai Municipality's Green Building Regulations require full-bore isolation on all chilled water circuits to minimize pressure drop. MT full-bore butterfly valves comply with ASHRAE 90.1 energy efficiency standards required for Estidama and Green Building certification.
Material — Ductile Iron GGG40
Dubai/Abu Dhabi MEP specs universally call for ductile iron GGG40 (EN 1563) as the body material for flanged butterfly and gate valves in chilled water service. Cast iron (grey iron) is not acceptable on new-build UAE projects. MT butterfly valve bodies are GGG40 as standard.
